This was a different general season than most here in Montana. Most of our areas that proved to be good in the past just weren’t producing. Areas that are normally good for muley’s were covered up by whitetail’s. Guys who normally killed big deer and elk, were not. I don’t know what it was but something was different. However, even with the year being somewhat off, the Zing Team managed to pull off another great season. Rifle season started in frustration as weeks of scouting went down the drain. Jason, Jeff, and Ryley (Jason’s son) were set up on some good bulls Jason had been watching. Before it was legal to shoot someone started firing shots off and sent the entire herd in the opposite direction. The next weekend Jason and Lance decided to look for deer. They must have been in the right place at the right time because before they knew it there was 30 head of elk filling through the canyon across from them. Tailing the herd was a nice 5 by 4 bull that looked mighty good to Lance! It wasn’t a deer but we weren’t complaining! After that things slowed down. Jason was spending most of his time chasing the “G2" buck. A great buck he had found in archery season but was never able to let an arrow fly on. Tim and George were traveling to the southeastern part of the state chasing big mule deer bucks. On the third weekend Tim’s persistence payed off as he was able to take a great 8 by 5 muley with one shot from the 270 win. A few day’s later, on November 7th Jason was also rewarded with a chance at “G2.” He was ready, as he had waited a long time for that shot. A vital quartering away shot at about 200 yards and Jason’s quest for “G2" was over. It was worth all of the effort as this was Jason’s best whitetail yet! Jason also managed to shoot and film this entire hunt by himself! Many days were spent in the field trying to get good footage for Zing 2. Alot of close encounters and maybe even a few misses! On the last day of the season Jason found a herd of about 100 head of elk. He had already made up his mind that if he could not find a good mature bull he would be happy with a cow as he had already passed on several smaller bulls earlier in the season. As he and Lance waited and watched for a big bull to emerge a small group of cows and calves fed into the meadow directly below them. Jason picked out the biggest oldest cow and let the 270 win. bark. A magnificent trophy for the last hour of the last day!
