Antelope season this year was a good one here in Montana. Many great antelope bucks were taken in the state this year from one end to the other. Archery season proved to be a little tougher than normal due to the frequency of small rainstorms. Making it hard to pin point a good water hole for setting up the ground blinds. That did not stop us from trying other things like decoys and spot and stalk. Unfortunately, the antelope were always one step ahead of us and none of us ever had the chance to let an arrow fly. October 7th was the first day of rifle season for speed goats this year and Team Zing was out in full force. Tim and George were hunting in the eastern part of the state looking for a buck that George had seen while scouting. Jon and Bart decided to try hunting an area Jon had found, more in the central part. As daylight broke, things looked good for Jon. While glassing from a haystack he spotted a good buck coming in his direction and totally clueless of his presence. One shot at about 180 yards and Jon had his first antelope buck! Shortly after taking care of Jon’s buck, Bart looked clear across the prairie and could see what looked to be a good buck following some doe’s. He wasted no time in grabbing his gear and heading out in hopes of getting a shot. After a long stalk Bart got set up in a rock outcropping and waited for the shot. This buck came a little too close and Bart could not pass up the opportunity. Later on in the season, George and Tim were out looking for monster mulies when they spotted this awesome buck! Things happened fast and before the camera had a chance to fire up, this buck decided to take off. George was ready though, and as he so often does, made a perfect shot just as the buck turned to go. This is a great buck at 16 ½" and one of the best bucks George has ever taken. Not bad for a last day antelope! |
